I believe these two concepts are key to a healthy, long life. Everyone knows a healthy diet and exercise are pillars to living a healthy lifestyle; however, we often forget the importance of mental and spiritual health as part of that lifestyle, too.
So what does it really mean to “be present,” and why does it matter? How do “being present” and being part of “community” support a healthy life? I’m glad you asked.
I often find myself regretting things from yesterday and stressing about tasks for tomorrow. Not only do I realize I waste a lot of negative energy and time, but I also miss out on what’s around me—in the moment. When I’m overwhelmed with tasks that need to be accomplished and life decisions weighing me down, my mental health suffers. There’s something behind the phrase, “stop and smell the roses.” Taking a deep breath and taking time to reflect on where you are in that moment can relieve you of the burden of stress that may be weighing you down.
I can’t say enough about how the little moments are so important—and how they lead to a healthier life—when we can just pause and truly live in the moment.
I travel a lot for work and often find myself in a restaurant or hotel bar alone. That used to make me feel uncomfortable and isolated, but now I take in the moment. I look around at the people, watch interactions, and notice the experiences they seem to be sharing—and I just smile. I think about how grateful I am. A stranger compliments my shoes. A little girl being smothered in kisses by her mother smiles at me. A man excuses himself and asks about the wine I’m drinking. And in that moment, I’m not thinking about yesterday’s regrets or tomorrow’s tasks—I just feel blessed to be surrounded by joy in a world that can feel chaotic.
Pair that with community—your support base—and you have a powerful combination for mental and spiritual health. Take the gym community: for many, a workout is a space of meditation, where you can just focus on you. For others, it’s an opportunity to engage with other athletes like you—people who may be facing similar life issues.
A gym community, like at Trident, can help you cry and laugh when you need to, giving you the healthy support you need for a healthy lifestyle. I personally find more than physical health at Trident—I find friendship, encouragement, and people I can push (and who push me) to be the best version of ourselves. It truly fills my soul.
Take time to be present—and lean on your communities for mental and spiritual growth.
