The Power of Prayer

Prayer is one of the oldest and most universal human practices, found across cultures and faiths. At its core, prayer is more than just words—it is a connection. For some, it is a way to speak with God; for others, a moment of reflection, gratitude, or hope.

The power of prayer lies in its ability to bring peace in moments of chaos and strength in times of weakness. Studies have shown that prayer and meditation can reduce stress, lower anxiety, and improve overall well-being. But beyond science, prayer offers something deeply personal: a sense of comfort in knowing we are not alone, and a belief that there is meaning beyond the challenges we face.

For me, prayer is a direct conversation with God. I was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2021 and colon cancer in 2024. Since then, I’ve endured countless scans, blood draws, three major surgeries, five rounds of radiation, and 10 rounds of chemotherapy. Through it all, my prayer has remained the same: for peace and strength. Peace to calm my anxious mind and heavy heart. Strength to face the physical and emotional toll. And above all, peace and strength for my two boys. I may never understand why I’ve had cancer twice, but I have always known I am not alone.

Prayer also has the power to unite. When people come together to pray, they share intentions, lift each other up, and create a bond rooted in compassion. Whether whispered in solitude or spoken in community, prayer softens hearts and reminds us of what truly matters.

During treatment, my mom often reminded me that her church group was praying for me. My neighbor added my name to her church’s prayer list. I was lifted in prayer by family, friends, neighbors—even people I had never met. In the overwhelming moments, I could feel the power of those prayers holdingme up.

Prayer isn’t only for hard times. It is also a way to celebrate life’s joys, express gratitude, and acknowledge blessings both big and small. In good moments, prayer deepens our appreciation and keeps us mindful of the goodness already present in our lives.

Despite everything, I’m deeply grateful for the blessings I experienced along the way—like the infusion nurse who instinctively knew what I needed, the neighbor who organized a six-month meal train for me and my boys, and the good health and fitness that allowed me to keep exercising throughout treatment.

In the end, the true power of prayer may not lie in changing our circumstances, but in knowing we are never alone. Prayer helps us face life’s storms with faith, celebrate its gifts with gratitude, and live each day with hope.
