The Benefits of Active Stretching: Move Better, Feel Better, Perform Better

A Note from Coach Jonathan:

At Trident Athletics, we get a lot of questions about improving mobility. While there are many approaches to stretching, I want to share why active stretching has become a game-changer for our community—and why it deserves a spot in your training routine.

What Makes Active Stretching Different?

Think of active stretching as taking ownership of your mobility.

Instead of passively holding a stretch, you're actively engaging your muscles through controlled movement. It’s like the difference between sitting in a car and actually driving it—you are in control of the journey.

Why It Matters for Your Training

As a coach, I’ve seen firsthand how active stretching enhances performance, prevents injury, and builds body awareness. Here's how it works at each stage of your training:

Pre-Workout Power-Up

  • Primes your muscles for Olympic lifts and complex movement patterns
  • Prepares your body for explosive CrossFit-style training
  • Activates key muscle groups before Hyrox-style efforts
  • Increases core temperature and blood flow for safer performance

During Your Workout

  • Improves form and control in compound lifts and gymnastics work
  • Enhances range of motion in critical movement patterns
  • Supports injury prevention by activating stabilizers
  • Encourages better coordination and proprioception

Long-Term Gains

  • Develops progressive flexibility and mobility over time
  • Enhances recovery between sessions by promoting circulation
  • Reinforces quality movement habits
  • Improves mind-muscle connection for more efficient training

Coach’s Tips for Success

Over the years, I’ve coached hundreds of athletes and everyday movers through active stretching. Here’s what works:

  • Start with intention and control – keep movements slow and purposeful
  • Focus on quality over quantity – three good reps beat 10 sloppy ones
  • Listen to your body’s feedback – discomfort is okay; pain is not
  • Stay consistent – small doses regularly make a big difference

Real Applications at Trident

We integrate active stretching into nearly every program at Trident, including:

  • Our daily warm-up sequences
  • Prep phases for Olympic lifting blocks
  • Between strength training sets to maintain range and control
  • Post-workout cooldowns and recovery work
  • Hyrox programming (already available in your member app)

The Bottom Line

Whether you're showing up for our Dad Bod Be Gone program, crushing CrossFit WODs, or training for your next Hyrox event, active stretching isn’t just about being more flexible—it’s about creating a stronger, more capable body.
